Description: Over the span of two days, participants will delve into essential vocal styles crucial for success in musical theatre. The first day will encompass traditional and contemporary musical theatre vocal styles, including group singing sessions, individual vocal masterclasses, and discussions on developing a seamless mixed voice. The second day will focus on mastering musical theatre belting techniques and selecting impactful audition songs. Throughout the masterclass, participants will also acquire valuable insights into repertoire selection and performance skills necessary for achieving success in musical theatre.

Day 1
Musical Theatre Vocal Styles: An Overview - 11am-12:30pm (1.5 hour)
Students will explore the vocal styles which singers need to be able to execute in order to be successful in musical theatre shows. They will examine the stylistic elements of traditional musical theatre, the concept of the rock musical, and how musical theater singing has changed to reflect the rock and pop-oriented approach of contemporary musical theatre composers.

Group Singing Session: “Legit” - 12:30pm-1:30pm (1 hour)
We will begin our exploration of musical theatre singing styles by looking at music from the “legit” musical theatre canon. We will discuss the foundational elements of “legit” singing and apply those concepts to the singing of sample pieces by iconic composers such as Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim, and Lucy Simon.

Vocal Masterclass: Traditional Musical Theatre - 2:30pm-4:00pm (1.5 hour)
Applying elements from the previous sessions, 5 selected participants will work on vocal technique and song interpretation in one-on-one sessions, in a traditional (Golden Age or Post-Golden Age) musical theatre song. Singers will hone their vocal and performance skills with feedback from the instructor and fellow workshop participants. Performers should express their interest in participating and their song selection with the application process.

Group Singing and Discussion: “Mix” - 4:00pm-5:00pm (1 hour)
We will discuss the concept of “mix”: what it is and why it’s crucial for effective and efficient musical theatre technique. Students will learn exercises and explore repertoire options for developing a seamless mixed quality in the middle voice.

Day 2
Musical Theatre Belt: Listening and Evaluation - 11am-12pm (1 hour)
We will begin the day by listening to and discussing some of the most well-known and effective belters in musical theatre. Students will learn how musical theatre belt was performed traditionally and how it has evolved in recent decades.

Group Singing Session: Belt - 12pm-1:30pm (1.5 hour)
Students will participate in a group singing session where they will discover where to start in terms of learning how to belt, strategies for increasing their belt range, and exercises and repertoire for developing strength and stamina.

Vocal Masterclass: Contemporary Musical Theatre - 2:30pm-4:00pm (1.5 hour)
Applying elements from the previous sessions, 5 selected participants will work on vocal technique and song interpretation in one-on-one sessions, in a contemporary (post-2000) musical theatre song. Singers will hone their vocal and performance skills with feedback from the instructor and fellow workshop participants. Performers should express their interest in participating and their song selection with the application process.

How to Pick the Perfect Audition Song - 4:00pm-5:00pm (1 hour)
Singers are often worried about bringing in “overdone” songs to auditions. In this session, students will discover exciting new musical theatre composers and their songs which can keep their book fresh and up-to-date, and which will inspire new artistic expressions in both auditions and performance. We will also look at what casting directors really want and how to craft an audition which provides maximum impact in just 32-bars.
